[Silent Book Club ~ Ottawa Chapter] Chilly Return to Routine & Cozy Reading

Hello, dear Reader,

Our fair city has been wrapped up in chilly-weather for a couple of days, after a whole bunch of rain that local farmers sorely needed. I don't know about you, but for me, this kind of weather, despite coming on the heels of all the warmth we've been enjoying, means cozying with a cup of something hot, steaming and sweet, and reading the hours away.

Now... that sounds pretty ideal, but in reality, it can also mean a lot of prep returning to routine -- whether that's school or work. Even in my semi-retired life, I find September means that routine and back-to-school vibes are simply, in the air.

This year, it also means a few small changes in our meetup schedule (not much, don't worry) and a renewed request for you, should you wish to see a Silent Book Club gathering in your area of the city, to reach out and find out if hosting a meetup is something you would like to do.

Why host a Silent Book Club meetup? Well, you'd be joining a global movement that supports free, accessible events that promote reading. By joining the nine Ottawa meetups (as part of the global SBC movement of nearly 2,000 chapters in 60+ countries), you'll meet like-minded readers, and help others find a reading community in a supportive environment.
Reach out if this sounds like something you'd like to do!

Warmly as always, and bookishly, too,
~
nicole

What am I reading these days?

currently reading: St. Marin's Cozy Mystery, Plotted for Murder by ACF Bookens
Nothing like a cozy mystery set in a bookshop!

finished my audio-reading of A Two-Spirit Journey by Ma-nee Chacaby
(selected as this year's Canada Reads book-people-should-read)
I am glad I chose to audio-read this book,
as it came closer to what I imagined it would be like,
to hear the author tell me their story.

partway through: The Greek Coffin Mystery by Ellery Queen (audio)
Classic Ellery-style swagger and dagger.

current book club book: Artemis by Andy Weir
'Looking forward to this. (Thanks, Fiona!) It'll be good to step out of my comfort-genre.

as always, still chiselling away at: The Creative Act by Rick Rubin (audio-read)

added to the tbr pile: A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers
The first of these Monk & Robot books, A Psalm for the Wild-Built, is one of my all-time favourite reads.
I look forward to book two.

So many books,..........

I would LOVE to know...
- if you've read any of these, please let me know what you thought.
- what are YOU reading these days?
Please reply and reach out anytime.

How does a reading meetup work?

  • Typically, at reading meetups, 60 minutes of reading is bookended by 30 minutes of chit-chat and sharing, during which time you are encouraged to order something to sip or nibble, as these spaces are being provided free of charge to the chapter. Some hosts are putting their own spin on this format, so it might vary a bit... but the cornerstones of sbc613 are always present: reading, inclusiveness, and no admission.

Make your experience fit your vibe

  • On the sign up page, click through to the various location links and get to know our meetup spaces!
From location to timing, choose which best suits your ideal reading meetup.
  • Come just in time for the reading then scoot at the end of reading time, or come to share and discover what others are reading.
    This is your sbc experience!
  • And please... come a little hungry or thirsty... ready to support our host venues. 💛

August 2025 Welcome to August, Reader. I hope that these warm (and in some cases very hot!!) months have found you keeping as cool as you can and making sure you are hydrated. There is always so much available in our fair city during the Summer months, from music festivals to tasty markets, that it's not always easy to find time for either of those things. Sure, I read a fair bit. Okay... I read a lot. I love to have a few books on the go, from fiction to non-, and from light to challenging....

Readers at Absinthe Cafe in HintonburgJune 2025 We recently told you about all of the new meetups that have started this Summer, and here we are to let you know the dates for each of them during the next month. We still have some simmering changes (venue relocation, schedule shift, and more new meetups!) But don't worry: we'll keep you posted on all of that through social media and here in our trusty newsletter. For now, meetup locations and timing are no mystery: scroll down to see the list...
