[Silent Book Club ~ Ottawa Chapter] Almost Over?? Say it Ain't So!

“Summer’s lease hath all too short a date.”

William Shakespeare

I hear lots of people feeling rushed by the fading of the Summer months. Here in Canada, we already have such a short Summer season without cutting it shorter still!... Right?

I will admit that I am guilty of looking outside, glancing at the calendar, and sighing, my head spinning, noticing time moving on too quickly, and even looking towards the plans already taking shape for the Autumn months.

Often, it's only by grasping my book, determinedly opening it to my bookmark's spot, and ferociously reading, that I feel time slow down, just a bit. For those moments, I can block out the skittering, rushing thoughts of Fall activity plans, of what's coming next and of all the prep'ing and plan'ing I need to get done. For those moments, I forget that we're nearly halfway through to September. (What??, I hear you say, but we're barely a third of the way through August! I know... I know.)

Maybe, just maybe, with a few more determined moments of reading, soaking up the delight of stories and even getting lost in the worlds of fae and magic, I will manage to hang onto the Summer moments for the time they deserve. Perhaps, I'll manage to feel Summer cradling me for just a little longer, if I just tune out the world and dive into my latest book.

Are you still basking in Summer reads? Or are you picking up crisp, cool stories already?

I realise, as I read back on this and other notes I've recently shared, that I seem to be more influenced by my seasonal surroundings than I might realise. I suppose I knew this to be true in my life, in general, but I am discovering that my reading life -- my reading practice -- is also flavoured by whether it's sun-beach-cottage time, or whether the leaves are turning and I'm digging out my cozy sweaters.

Does the seasons' cycles have a say in what books are stacked on your nightstand? Do you have one genre of tasty reads when you're stretched out on a beachy towel, and quite another when curled up by the fire and the Autumn winds blow...?

I'd love to know what kinds of reading you're doing in this season... please hit rely and let me know!

What I'm reading...
I have paused my reading of A Spoonful of Murder by Robin Stevens, although I am really enjoying it. It's coming together slyly and keeping me on my toes. While I was reading that, my hold on The House in the Cerluean Sea by TJ Klune (one of my favourite authors) came up. I dove into that right away and I am delighted by Klune's clever mind and clever writing. I renewed my hold on The Embroidered Book by Kate Heartfield, local Ottawa author, and hope to be finished Stevens' and Klune's books when it comes due! Of course, there are many more books in my TBR pile, but for now, one book at a time. ;)

That's all from me for now. Happy reading!

Warmly and bookishly, as always,
~

nicole

March 2025 “For most of history,Anonymous was a woman.” ― Virginia Woolf Welcome to March. In this part of the world, it came in like a lion, indeed. As I sit here with my hands paused, fingertips poised and ready to write to you, my mind swirls with the maelstrom happening outside of my safe little office walls. Inside here, I can convince myself that the world can be safe and calm... just not right now. Because even inside here, there are too many things, impossible to deny; impossible to...

February 14, 2025 “What a blessing it is to love books.” ― Elizabeth von Arnim, The Solitary Summer We're about halfway through February and we've just had the heaviest snowfall of the Winter. No surprise, really. But it does mean that many folks spent the better part of the last 24 hours digging themselves out of over a foot of snow... 32 cm to be precise, according to some reports. AND... there's more coming this weekend. But you know... this is a good thing. It's supposed to snow, in this...
