[Silent Book Club ~ Ottawa Chapter] April showers bring... May! With a growing list of meetups & events!

“To read is to fly:
it is to soar to a point of vantage
which gives a view over wide terrains of history,
human variety, ideas, shared experience
and the fruits of many inquiries.”

A.C. Grayling

Dear Reader,

I hope that the warmer weather is bringing you warmth of spirit and lots an'lots of time to read. My life ebbs and flows with busyness and in the between times is when much of my reading happens. Where someone else might say, oh see, today's sun is shining bright let's go run in the fields, or, alas there is nothing in the air but glum and gray and pouring rain, let's crawl under blankets and sleep, I say, in either case, lo, now is the time to read.

There's lots to share in today's newsletter... read on!

What I'm reading these days...

Well, I never did finish Girlfriend on Mars by Deborah Willis. This was, I must admit, one time when I chose to exercise my right to DNF a book. I was audio-reading it and it's possible that the narration/voices affected my opinion. I simply could not bring myself to enjoy or care about the characters. DNFing a book is a rare thing for me. (Where do you stand on that, Reader? What's your rule about giving a book a chance before deciding not to finish it?) Others in our book club really liked it, and I loved hearing their perspectives on it.

My contribution for our next book club gathering is Lowcountry Boil by Susan M. Boyer. With an edgy female protagonist and an even edgier story line, it gives Alphabet Series vibes (you might remember, "A is for Alibi", etc. by Sue Grafton, featuring insurance investigator, Kinsey Millhone), and I'm enjoying it. I decided I'd share with our little book club group, the style of books that I find tasty and enjoyable: cozy mysteries. Aunt Dimity Takes a Holiday by Nancy Atherton just became available from the library, so that's up next - followed by The Rose Bargain by Sasha Peyton Smith, when that hold comes due. Oh! And I just picked up The Maid's Secret, Nita Prose's lastest book in the Molly the Mail Series! Can't wait to read that one, too!

Although I have set aside Steve P. Aitchison's The Witches of Scotland Series (The Dream Dancers: Akashic Chronicles, Books 1-8), I do plan on diving into it at some point. I'll ask again... Reader, if you have read them, please write back and let me know how you liked them! Also on audio, I am moving forward slowly with The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. I am enjoying soaking up his insights on creativity, and his sharing about the music industry.

Gosh... I am loving soaking up all this literary creativity!

Always warmly and forevery bookishly,
~ nicole

p. s. ~ I will likely be heading to the Ottawa writers festival on Saturday May 3, for most of the afternoon/evening. So if you're there and see me, please, please stop and say hello!

How does a reading meetup work?

  • Typically, at reading meetups, 60 minutes of reading is bookended by 30 minutes of chit-chat and sharing, during which time you are encouraged to order something to sip or nibble, as these spaces are being provided free of charge to the chapter. Some hosts are putting their own spin on this format, so it might vary a bit... but the cornerstones of sbc613 are always present: reading, inclusiveness, and no admission.

Make your experience fit your vibe

  • On the sign up page, click through to the various location links and get to know our meetup spaces!
From location to timing, choose which best suits your ideal reading meetup.
  • Come just in time for the reading then scoot at the end of reading time, or come to share and discover what others are reading.
    This is your sbc experience!
  • And please... come a little hungry or thirsty... ready to support our host venues. 💛
