“To read is to fly: ― A.C. Grayling Dear Reader, I hope that the warmer weather is bringing you warmth of spirit and lots an'lots of time to read. My life ebbs and flows with busyness and in the between times is when much of my reading happens. Where someone else might say, oh see, today's sun is shining bright let's go run in the fields, or, alas there is nothing in the air but glum and gray and pouring rain, let's crawl under blankets and sleep, I say, in either case, lo, now is the time to read. There's lots to share in today's newsletter... read on! · · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · · Book swaps are great opportunities to shed some of your old reads and welcome in some new ones: a wonderful, free exchange of recycle, re-use, and RE-READ. Join us at Anina’s Café in Vanier Tasty snacks, treats, and beverages will be available to purchase as you browse! How it works:
Anina’s Café is located at 280 Joffré-Bélanger Way in the heart of Vanier. · · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · · What I'm reading these days... Well, I never did finish Girlfriend on Mars by Deborah Willis. This was, I must admit, one time when I chose to exercise my right to DNF a book. I was audio-reading it and it's possible that the narration/voices affected my opinion. I simply could not bring myself to enjoy or care about the characters. DNFing a book is a rare thing for me. (Where do you stand on that, Reader? What's your rule about giving a book a chance before deciding not to finish it?) Others in our book club really liked it, and I loved hearing their perspectives on it. My contribution for our next book club gathering is Lowcountry Boil by Susan M. Boyer. With an edgy female protagonist and an even edgier story line, it gives Alphabet Series vibes (you might remember, "A is for Alibi", etc. by Sue Grafton, featuring insurance investigator, Kinsey Millhone), and I'm enjoying it. I decided I'd share with our little book club group, the style of books that I find tasty and enjoyable: cozy mysteries. Aunt Dimity Takes a Holiday by Nancy Atherton just became available from the library, so that's up next - followed by The Rose Bargain by Sasha Peyton Smith, when that hold comes due. Oh! And I just picked up The Maid's Secret, Nita Prose's lastest book in the Molly the Mail Series! Can't wait to read that one, too! Although I have set aside Steve P. Aitchison's The Witches of Scotland Series (The Dream Dancers: Akashic Chronicles, Books 1-8), I do plan on diving into it at some point. I'll ask again... Reader, if you have read them, please write back and let me know how you liked them! Also on audio, I am moving forward slowly with The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. I am enjoying soaking up his insights on creativity, and his sharing about the music industry. Gosh... I am loving soaking up all this literary creativity! Always warmly and forevery bookishly, p. s. ~ I will likely be heading to the Ottawa writers festival on Saturday May 3, for most of the afternoon/evening. The warmth and sunshine of June is here, bringing with it cozy Spring reads! It was a wonderful event!...
