“A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. ― Sarah Ban Breathnach One thing that lights me up in the way that welcoming a group of readers at a Silent Book Club meetup, is knowing that meetups are burgeoning across the city. These are all meetups you're already familiar with, but some are shifting schedule and one is UN-pausing after the Summer months. Will the real New Year please stand up...! We all know what the calendar tells us: the new year begins on January 1 - the Gregorian calendar, that is. There are many other calendars that might disagree. In researching "new year" dates and information, I realised that the very concept of relating the start of other calendars to my own, is near'impossible. Why am I going on about this, you might ask? Well... there are arguments to be made that Autumn holds a greater claim to our own sense of newness when it comes to activities and daily life. "Fall is beautiful, but its splendour — the colourful leaves, the bounty of the harvest, the crisp air — is actually contingent on death, as nature shuts down in preparation for the big chill. There’s a letting go that comes with autumn, yes, but there’s also a starting over. Autumn brings cold, but it also brings a renewed energy; as the stifling head of summer subsides, so too does our heat-borne relaxation. In the fall, we get moving; we always have." So while we, in the western world largely look to the new year starting on the first of January, "a more practical new year — the point in the calendar for planning, productivity and, if you’re so inclined, reinvention — comes at the beginning of autumn." 🔹 So... in the spirit of this not-so-new way of thinking, I am so excited to let you know about some new stuff happening with the #sbc613 meetups! All those details are below, so read on... · · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · · First, let me thank you... The very fact that you have signed up for these emails, let alone opening them up and reading them makes my heart soar, sweet Reader. All of my stories and thoughts, my reminders and lists... I love writing them and sending them to you, but the really great part is knowing you enjoy reading! Thank you, thank you, thank you. · · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · · What am I reading, you ask...? Our latest book club book was chosen by Fiona, and she suggested Masters of Death by Olivie Blake. What a great, weirdly ghoulish read for October! 'Am about a third of the way through and I am enjoying it - though the tone and cadence took some getting used to at first. (I just imagined one of the characters played by David Tennant, and I was good.) Set aside until that's done is The Book Woman's Daughter: A Novel by Kim Michele Richardson - sequel to The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek - a compelling book that had me further-reading on the interwebs, to find out more about the Kentucky Pack Horse Library Service and the blue-skinned people of Kentucky. Seriously... if you've not heard of this book, I recommend it. On the horizon are so many cozy mysteries and steamy romantasy novels, that I've lost track. Please reply and let me know what's on your nightstand or cozy fireside table, what has you compelled to read just one more chapter. I'd love to know. · · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · · As always, please make sure you use the signup links... March 2025 “For most of history,Anonymous was a woman.” ― Virginia Woolf Welcome to March. In this part of the world, it came in like a lion, indeed. As I sit here with my hands paused, fingertips poised and ready to write to you, my mind swirls with the maelstrom happening outside of my safe little office walls. Inside here, I can convince myself that the world can be safe and calm... just not right now. Because even inside here, there are too many things, impossible to deny; impossible to...
February 14, 2025 “What a blessing it is to love books.” ― Elizabeth von Arnim, The Solitary Summer We're about halfway through February and we've just had the heaviest snowfall of the Winter. No surprise, really. But it does mean that many folks spent the better part of the last 24 hours digging themselves out of over a foot of snow... 32 cm to be precise, according to some reports. AND... there's more coming this weekend. But you know... this is a good thing. It's supposed to snow, in this...
