[Silent Book Club ~ Ottawa Chapter] Cheering each other on... And a long list of meetup news!

Hello, Reader!

Short and sweet for this month's newsletter: I wanted to share that I have been thinking about cheerleading, championing and supporting, when it comes to the things we take on, both in our life in general and specifically in our creative lives.

We express deep respect by our supportive actions, when those we care for dive into big dreams and big plans. First, if they have chosen to share those plans and dreams with us, we take on the right and responsibility of cheering them on. Secondly, once we have felt that same kind of support from others in our own lives, it becomes nearly second nature to pay forward that same support.

It means that what's important to the dreamer, becomes important to their cheerleaders.

I think about this in the context of the Ottawa chapter of SBC. There are cornerstones that we have been upholding, to the best of our abilities, which include: openness to and inclusion of everyone, fair and free access to venues and meetups, and positivity in promoting reading.

These do not originate with us. They are the merits that Laura and Guinevere, founders of Silent Book Club, set down as touchstones of the movement in early days. By founding a chapter here in our city, we have become supporters of and embrace these virtues; and in turn, you, our members, have become champions of those ideals, too.

That's all - we are grateful for you and your support.

Warmly, gratefully, and as always, bookishly,

~ nicole (& the whole SBC613 team)

p. s. So much to share with you, Reader... Keep on reading!

Calabogie Brewing Company
105 Schneider Rd., Kanata ON

Join us for our SBC613 2026 Fall Book Swap, where book lovers of all kinds can gather to exchange their gently-loved reads and
discover new favorites. Whether you're into thrillers, romance, historical fiction, or fantasy, there’s something for everyone!

Here’s how it works:

  • Register before the event.
  • Bring a book (or more!): Choose something you’d love to pass on to someone else. No need to bring a new book—gently-used titles are perfect!
  • Swap and Explore: Browse the selection, chat with fellow book lovers, and take home a new book (or two!) to enjoy this season.
  • Stay for the Vibes: Enjoy some refreshments and a snack, and the company of fellow readers. Let’s celebrate the magic of books and the joy of discovering new stories.

Just bring a couple of books and an open mind! We can’t wait to see you there and share the joy of reading!

Hey Barrhaven! We're looking for a host!

If you are in the Barrhaven area, have been attending the meetup there (or haven't yet!),
AND really want to see the meetup continue...

Please consider taking on the hosting duties!
(At least for the foreseeable future.)

Please email us if you are interested.

· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·

Please note...

Our meetup list is growing,
so please make sure to take note of the
time and date changes that might be affecting your favourite meetup.

I've heard that although normally, the Kanata Brunch meets outside weather might be such that inside is a better option for this month.
Host Fred Aubin assures us that "the food at LUNA Crepes & CAFE is just as delicious indoors as it is on the patio."

We're having our first official Pop-Up meetup on Saturday, September 12 ~ scroll down for all the details!

Don't forget to sign up for our Fall Book Swap, happening on September 15th (details above and below).
On that same date, the
Kanata meetup will take a pause, to avoid conflicting with the 'Swap.

Regular Hintonburg host, nicole, will be out of the province this month (running a ukulele camp in Nova Scotia!)
so regular meetup member Eric MacDonald is stepping up to host. Thank you, Eric!
Mentioning here again, that the
Barrhaven meetup is in need of a new host for the foreseeable future.
In the meantime, Rick Czapelka and Fred Aubin will help with hosting on behalf of Ashley Raymond. Thank you both so much!

How does a reading meetup work?

  • Typically, at reading meetups, 60 minutes of reading is bookended by 15-30 minutes of chit-chat and sharing, during which time you are encouraged to order something to sip or nibble, as all of the meetup spaces are provided free of charge to the chapter. Some hosts are putting their own spin on this format, so it might vary a bit... but the cornerstones of sbc613 are always present: reading, inclusiveness, and no admission cost!

Make your experience fit your vibe

  • On the sign up page, click through to the various location links and get to know our meetup spaces!
From location to timing, choose which best suits your ideal reading meetup.
  • Come just in time for the reading then scoot at the end of reading time, or come to share and discover what others are reading.
    This is your sbc experience!
  • And please... come a little hungry or thirsty... ready to support our host venues. 💛

July 2026 * photo cr.: UnSplash Hello, Reader! Happy Summer! I am hopping into your inbox with a short note about new meetups and events coming up this Summer. I'm also keeping this brief so you can head back outside to enjoy the gorgeous weather!! Last month we shared about the new meetups that started this past month. Well, we're still tickled about how the hosts have been bringing all this newness to the chapter's lists of meetups, and totally in love with how much you've enjoyed getting...
