Dear Reader ~ Have you noticed the frost on spruce-tips and white, cloudy puffs of air rising as you speak? There have been a morning or two when these were some of the sights of Autumn. But today, as I type this, there is a warm, overcast weight in the air, while tomorrow promises bright, crisp sunshine. Such changing weather, keeping us on our toes. In the past month, I have had the adventurous pleasure of being part of a bookish event that I won't soon forget... The owners and staff of my local bookshop (I say mine, as though I could gather it up in my arms at the end of the day and take it home) planned what they called a book brigade. It was not the first time I'd heard of such a thing. In fact, when I'd heard that The Spaniel's Tale was moving just 75m East of their long-time location, I'd posted to their socials, a story I'd read years ago, of a small, US bookshop using the old school brigade-style chain of people passing stock, book by book down the sidewalk to effect their move... in effect filling the new location's shelves quickly, efficiently and in the same order they'd been on the old shelves! Word travels fast and fierce when people feel community and belonging to something as vital as a local bookshop. Another shop patron had seen the very same report I had about a little store's efficient move, and share many such stories with Cole and Stephen, owners of the independent bookshop. So, they set to staging their own hand-to-hand move, and on a warm and sunny October Saturday after appeals to fans and patrons to sign up to the task, approximately 280 people showed up. Together, during two and a half hours, they moved approximately 7400 books, one by one, to the new location. Being part of such an event was heartwarming and energizing. The shop has since had its official opening and is already hosting literary events to delight the neighbourhood community. Have you ever been part of a book adventure that warmed your heart, Reader? October 2026 photo cr: UnSplash (Roman Khramov) Greetings, Reader ~ Fall colours are peeking into view and, as many say, they'll soon be peaking too! For now, in our part of the world, yellows are stealing the show, along with whispers of red. Soon, there will be a burst of golds, reds, and oranges too, from the green belt to the Gatineau hills, and everywhere in between. For some, Autumn is all about the colours. For others, it's about being the true New Year. We're one month in (as...
September 2026 ph. cr.: UnSplash (Heather Newsom) Hello, Reader! Short and sweet for this month's newsletter: I wanted to share that I have been thinking about cheerleading, championing and supporting, when it comes to the things we take on, both in our life in general and specifically in our creative lives. We express deep respect by our supportive actions, when those we care for dive into big dreams and big plans. First, if they have chosen to share those plans and dreams with us, we take...
